LekkeLeer
A reading practice app for young Afrikaans learners (Grade 1β3). Build confidence by reading sentences aloud, hearing correct pronunciation, and tracking progress week by week.
How it works
- 1Pick a week
Choose from Week 1 to 8 at the top of the page. - 2Tap a word
Tap any word to hear it spoken aloud. - 3Speel (Play)
Press π to hear the full sentence with karaoke highlighting. - 4Begin Lees (Start Reading)
Press π€ and read aloud. Words turn green as you go. - 5Earn stars
Complete a sentence for a star. Get all 7 to finish the week!
Tips for parents
- Let your child tap each word first to learn pronunciation before reading aloud.
- Use "Speel" to model the sentence β the karaoke highlight shows the pace.
- Check the Progress page to see completed sentences and reading speed.
- Works best in Chrome or Edge on a quiet device with a microphone.

Current limitations
- iOS browser support: Safari and other iOS browsers do not currently support the Web Speech API used for read-aloud recognition. Learners on iPhones or iPads won't be able to use the "Begin Lees" microphone feature. The planned solution is to build a dedicated iOS app that uses native speech recognition, providing full functionality on Apple devices.
- Microphone quality matters: Speech recognition works best in a quiet environment with a decent microphone. Background noise or low-quality built-in mics can cause words to be missed or misrecognized.
- Android variability: Speech recognition on Android Chrome can be unreliable on some devices β the mic may pick up sound (visualizer works) but words may not register. We've added mobile-specific handling; if issues persist, try a different Android device or use a laptop/desktop for the best experience.
- Browser requirement: For the best experience, use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Other browsers may have limited or missing speech recognition support.
- Internet required for first load: Audio is synthesized online and cached locally for future use. An internet connection is needed the first time each sentence is played, but subsequent visits work from the local cache.
Current focus
- User feedback: Actively gathering feedback from parents, teachers, and testers to identify issues, improve the reading experience, and prioritize what to build next. Use the "Your feedback" button to share your thoughts.
- Sharing and early adoption: Getting the app into the hands of more Grade 1β3 learners and their parents to validate the approach and build a community of early users.
- Stability and polish: Fixing bugs, improving speech recognition accuracy, and refining the UI based on real-world usage and feedback.
Future plans
- Expanding activities: Moving beyond reading sentences to include spelling words, English reading, and foundational maths (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) β all aligned to the South African CAPS curriculum by term and week.
- Gamification: Badges, streaks, and rewards to keep learners motivated and coming back every day.
- Dedicated iOS and Android apps: Native mobile apps with full speech recognition support, offline mode, and push notifications to encourage daily practice. Download the app β
- Studentβteacher portal: A dashboard where teachers can view learner progress, assign specific weeks, and track class-wide reading performance. Parents will also be able to link their child's account for a shared view of progress.
- Multi-language support: Extending to other South African languages (isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sesotho, etc.) to reach more learners across the country.
- Branding and identity: A proper branding process to define the app's name, visual identity β logo, colour palette, typography, and tone of voice. The current name is a working title; the final name will be chosen as part of this process. The goal is a polished, professional look that parents and schools trust, while staying playful and inviting for young learners.
